Prostitution

Some of the women in this room are clothed, others are undressed. Some are alone, some have company; their lips are painted red. Some look at us with a sad gaze and others don’t seem to have eyes at all. This series entitled Prostitution immerses us into a world of dark alleys. The scenes are set against abstract backgrounds that could evoke any city in the world. The dramatic brushstrokes and blotches of colour speak of loneliness and abandonment.

As is customary in Rando’s work, this series does not represent a condemnation or a denunciation. It is, rather, a depiction of that elusive reality. It is a call for social awareness towards an issue that is still relegated in the political and social agenda.

Through the lives of these women, the painter traces a story of dignity. Rando understands it as a fundamental part of the essence of mankind; an inherent and inalienable part of the human condition. The artist poses a question: can a person be stripped of their dignity? He answers with a resounding NO. That is why his work represents an uncompromising defence of the dignity of those who suffer injustice and inequality.

I just want to provide a space for these lives.  Jorge Rando
