Maternities

Women take centre stage again in this series of portraits that play with the boundaries between figuration and abstraction. This collection of oil paintings and watercolours is the product of more than two decades of work. It reveals the exorbitant creative capacity of the painter and speaks of his tireless pictorial struggle in search of the human essence.

For him, LOVE is the answer to pain. “The act of painting is the act of loving”, he says. “And what higher love is there than that of a mother?” The maternal figure plays a symbolic role in Rando’s work. She represents unconditional love, struggle and protection; she is the hope for the future.

“The mothers of my maternity scenes, says Rando, are always alert and cautious. Their love protects their children. Love acts as both a shield and a spear.”
