EDVARD MUNCH
Edvard Munch fue uno de los pintores más decisivos en los grandes cambios que sufrió la pintura en el paso del siglo XIX al XX. Su obra, partiendo de una revisión original del impresionismo, fue la pionera del esplendoroso movimiento expresionista que surgió en el Norte y el Centro de Europa para fecundar, de maneras muy distintas, el arte europeo y norteamericano del siglo X. Su gran intuición, unida a una vida torturada y difícil, le llevó a descubrir campos inéditos del alma humana que serían explorados más tarde por el psicoanálisis freudiano. Su vida bohemia en Christiania (la futura Oslo) y Berlín, unida a su obra expresiva y convulsa, le valieron, al principio, la indignación, el insulto y la incomprensión de la sociedad bien pensante. A pesar de ello, en 1902 había conseguido el reconocimiento de los círculos artísticos continentales y se le consideraba el abanderado de un arte nuevo. Cargado de información, con un profundo conocimiento de la vida y obra de Munch –al que conoció personalmente- y del mundo cultural escandinavo.

EDVARD MUNCH UND DEUTSCHLAND
Die Ausstellung Munch und Deutschland ist auf deutsche Initiative hin zustandegekommen. Angeregt wurde sie durch die große Schau Munch et la France, die das Munch-museet in Oslo 1991 gemeinsam mit dem Pariser Musée d´Orsay organisierte. Die zeitliche Reihenfolge dieser beiden Ausstellungen ist richtig und natürlich: Frankreich präsentiert Munchs erste bedeutende Begegnung mit dem kontinentalen Ausland, während Deutschland für seinen internationalen Durchbruch steht. Vor diesem Hintergrund konnte Edvard Munch, wesentlich unterstützt von deutschen Mäzenen und Freunden, zu einem der bedeutendsten europäischen Künstler seiner Zeit werden.

Inhis new and magnificently illustrated book, Arne Eggum, chief curator of the Munch Museum in Oslo, presents the results of fifteen years of research on Munch´s life. The author´s special access to Munch´s estate, private papers, and entire collection of over sixteen hundred works makes this a truly revelatory exploration of the Norwegian Expressionist painter. A third of its 450 illustrations are of works never before reproduced; sketches, watercolours, and pen-and-ink drwaings are juxtaposed with finished masterpieces. As one reads the accompanying text, augmented with passages from Munch´s diaries and letters, it is as if the artist himself were displaying his work: with extraordinary clarity, Munch details the events and people in his life as he represented them.
